Your business likely relies heavily on electricity and from time to time, you’ll need electrical repairs. It’s best to maintain your electrical system so you never have major issues, but if you notice that the system is failing, you should make immediate electrical repairs. There are a number of issues that may occur and if you’re paying attention, you can fix them before they turn into big problems.

You See Sparks

Do you notice sparks sometimes in the electrical outlets or lights? If you see any type of spark that is connected to an electrical system, you need to make sure you call for help immediately. It’s best to switch off the power, as well, to prevent a fire.

You Smell a Burning Odour

Electrical fires smell very distinctive and you’ll likely notice that peculiar odour in the air if something is overheating. It may not be a fire yet, but there could be a wire that is overloaded or an outlet that has overloaded. Immediately flip the breaker and call in some outside help.

Lights Keep Flickering

Are your lights flickering? If you know this isn’t a main grid problem (ie. No one else has flickering lights), then you’ll need to take steps to fix the problem. First, make note of which lights are flickering and ensure the bulbs are secure. If they are loose, this could cause the issue. If the problem continues and especially if it appears to be on one particular electrical line, call in a technician to work on the problem for you.

The Breaker Trips Frequently

Do you constantly have a breaker that trips? Do you limit how many appliances can be plugged in at once, because of the breaker tripping? If you have an issue such as not being able to run a blow dryer at the same time as the air compressor, then you likely need a better electrical system. It’s a good idea to get an electrician to come and look at the problem.

Machinery Cuts Out Frequently

Similar to the above issue, if you frequently have machinery turning off on you, it could be related to the electrical problems that cause the lights to flicker. If the breaker trips every time you turn on the machine, then you know you’re overloading the system, which shouldn’t happen from just one machine. Call for help with the electrical system to make sure it’s functional.

Outlets and Switches Stop Working or Work Poorly

Do you have an outlet or a light switch that just doesn’t work anymore? This is definitely an electrical problem and it may be that the wires are simply loose inside the switch. This is an easy fix, but it could be more serious and may even pose a fire risk.

This is also the case if the light switch works but only when you press it in just the right way. There are loose wires inside and the entire setup needs to be examined. However, if you have multiple switches or outlets that are not working well, you should be aware that it could be a larger problem.

Crackling Noises

Do you hear a crackling or sizzling noise coming from the wiring or an outlet? If so, stop using it immediately and call for an electrician. This is essential because that could be the sound of a short circuit. When combined with the burning smell previously mentioned, or sparks, then you know you have a serious problem that must be dealt with. Any time you notice that something is not right with your electrical system, you should not delay in requesting help from an electrician. This could save you from losing your business to an electrical fire at the worst and at the best, losing a valuable piece of equipment to a short circuit.

How to Prevent Electrical Problems in Your Business

Wondering how you can ensure that you don’t need a major electrical overhaul? There are several steps to take that will help you with this.
First, you should be sure that any electrical repairs needed are made as soon as possible. You should also ensure that all your main systems are fully functional and in good repair.

Air Conditioning Maintenance

Your air conditioning is an electrical setup and requires quite a lot of energy to run. If you want to be sure it will not cause issues in the future, you should be sure to have air conditioning maintenance done at least once a year. This should be done in the spring, before you actually need it. This way, when you start using the AC again, it will be completely functional.

Electrical Maintenance

It’s important to have electrical maintenance done, as well. There is normal wear and tear over time, which can result in dangerous situations if not taken care of. It’s best to schedule electrical maintenance to avoid small issues from becoming dangerous and possibly causing a fire. In order to prevent future issues, an electrician will come to test your outlets and switches and ensure there is no unexpected drop in power.

They will also check to be sure that the breaker box is fully functional and clean, as this is the main protection against short circuits and fires. The box must be in great working condition. Finally, the wires should be checked. Older electrical systems may use wiring that was simply not up to the new regulations and you may need to replace it all. Thin wiring can heat up faster and is more likely to cause a problem.

You will save time and money by ensuring your electrical system is maintained and ready to go. If you have any issues, they’re likely to be quite small and not as dangerous.

Boiler Maintenance

If your boiler is an issue, it will be noticed during routine boiler maintenance. This is also connected to the electrical system and you may need a boiler replacement if your old one is not safe. This may also be needed if you are struggling to keep the boiler efficient. With a boiler replacement, the new system will be upgraded and more efficient so you can expect it to have less impact on the electrical system.

Electricity may be dangerous in some cases, but it is also essential for most businesses. Consider how much money you would lose if the power went out for a week. Would it be worth it to save on electrical maintenance? Chances are, you will pay far less for the maintenance and electrical repairs than you would if your entire business goes out for a time.

It’s all a matter of priorities. You wouldn’t drive your car until it fell apart, you would be sure to get it fixed and checked out from time to time. The same goes for your electrical system. While this article focuses on your business and its electrical needs, remember that the same possibilities happen at home, as well.
